The biggest data center engineering challenge of the next five years will be the much-needed shift in industry mindset to more modularized and manufactured data center equipment, assemblies and buildings.
Understanding the advantages and efficiencies to be gained through process engineering will be the big hurdle. I anticipate a dramatic increase in the number of companies that take an "appliance approach" to data center engineering in the next few years. With the new levels of efficiency, reliability and speed-to-market offered by modular data centers, this shift will ultimately be unavoidable if the industry is to meet growing demand.
